Yes, I’m called to hold fast to the gospel.  But the gospel isn’t just something I hold onto.

It holds me.

…. which, by implication, means – He (the Shepherd of your soul) holds you (John 10:27-29 & Romans 8:38/39). Otherwise, where would we be?

david, you totally picked up on the implication: the gospel is a Person. so thankful …

  3. David Says:

Two ways to look at it…
It’s one thing to be “In His grip & by His grace”; that is an immense comfort, because (to quote Stuart Townend) “there’s nothing I can do .. to make You love me more .. to make You love me less than you do .. ’cause it’s GRACE”. He chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world (Eph 1:4), and He will both keep us & present us faultless (Jude 24). In that sense we are gripped by Omnipotent Love.
On the other hand, are we gripped by the gospel, in the sense of being grateful for it, and passionate about it? Better, grateful for the Lord and so passionate about Him that it overflows?
That – sadly – is all too often another matter …..

    it’s a mysterious duality, isn’t it? :]

i was writing from a truth-comfort point of view, which is yet another facet. when i can’t hold to the truth of the gospel as i see people and circumstances around me, i’m reminded that it is a truth that transcends what i feel about the matter. so it isn’t just a truth i cling to; it’s a truth that carries me. there’s a sweet duality in that, too.

and ah, the last point you referred to … to love Him more, to be gripped by the fullness of His truth to the point where it overflows … that should be the constant, fervent prayer of His church …..
